THE

HE period is now arrived when, as ufual, we take the opportunity of expreffing our grateful acknowledgements to our Subfcribers and Readers, and at the fame time we beg leave to affure them of the exertion of our best efforts to obtain and preserve their approbation.

The original defign of this Publication-to exhibite a just picture of the present ftate of Literature-to give biographical anecdotes of remarkable characters-to afford a repofitory for original productions of genius, whether in profe or verse-to record the events that are of national importance, and to give a faithful abridgement of Parliamentary proceedings, as well as a full register of Marriages, Births, Deaths, Preferments, and Promotions has, we flatter ourselves, been adhered to with fome degree of attention and care: And we hope, that in no inftance have we given encouragement to indecorum or licentioufnefs; but have endeavoured to ftrengthen the bulwark of virtue, while we inform the head, or please the fancy.

Having faid fo much, we will not, however, conceal the complaints of fome truly refpectable Subfcribers, and with them we incline to be of opinion, that rather too much of the Work has hitherto been dedicated to the Chronicle of Events, of courfe a fmaller proportion could be given to the Literary part. Newspapers are now fo generally read, it no doubt becomes irkfome to fee the fame things too circumftantially repeated; therefore a more fcrupulous felection of occurrences will in future be given to mark events, independent of many relative.circumftances, will answer the purposes of a Repertory, and thus the foregoing objections will be avoided.

The Editors mean to introduce feveral new articles into the future numbers; particularly they intend giving a connected view of the Topography and Natural Hiftory of Scotland. This
