RASER'S MAGAZINE.

FR

The Publisher feels great pleasure in announcing, that among the usual variety of articles, the First Number for the year 1833 will be enriched with the celebrated, but hitherto unpublished Poem, of the late Lord Byron on Mr. Samuel Rogersperhaps the finest thing of the kind ever written by his Lordship. In addition to this gem, will be found some original Stanzas by the late Percy Bysshe Shelley, with Papers by the Ettrick Shepherd, John Galt, Sir David Brewster, &c. &c. The Gallery of Literary Characters, No. XXXII. is a full-length Portrait of Prince Talleyrand, Author of Palmerston-une Comedie de deux Ans.'

The Publisher of this Periodical begs to submit to the reading Public the following notice of his December Number, especially inviting the attention of those who may be desirous of subscribing for a monthly Magazine for the year 1833.

"This Number of Fraser-we say it deliberately, and after a careful examination of its contents-is the very best which this spirited publisher has yet produced. We have no hesitation in saying, that, as a Magazine, Fraser's is superior to any now published. Blackwood wields a political weapon of mighty power, and of most extensive and salutary influence. He maintains the good cause of the constitution against its enemies of every kind with unwearied zeal, unflinching boldness, and transcendent ability; but it is by these efforts, and by the splendid papers of Professor Wilson on subjects of imagination and criticism, that Blackwood's Magazine maintains its lofty eminence in the periodical literature of the day. Considered as a Magazine, it is deficient both in lightness and variety. Fraser, though less exclusively political than Blackwood, does not yield to him in the vigour with which he treats political questions, nor in the zeal and ability with which he advocates sound principles."-Halifax Guardian.

Subscribers' names for Fraser's Magazine are received by all Booksellers, Stationers, and Newsmen, in Town and Country; and may be had regularly of them, or the Publisher, at 215, Regent-street, London.

COTTAGER'S MONTHLY VISITOR.

NEW SERIES.

This Miscellany, which has been published with increasing success during twelve years, is now offered to the public at a reduced price, in the expectation of a still wider circulation, and to enable a much larger proportion of those classes to which its pages are more particularly addressed, to give the Monthly Visitor' a welcome reception. Drawings of Scenery and Figures have been introduced into the latter Numbers of the Work, in order to give additional variety to its pages; and these Embellishments will be continued in each Number of the present Series. In reducing the price, it has been found requisite to lessen the extent by a few pages; which is, however, compensated in a great degree by a more compressed mode of printing.

The Work will be continued under the same Editorial direction, and upon the same principles as before, providing a copious Manual of Religious Instruction and Domestic Economy for the poorer Classes, and adapted likewise to the use of Servants and Households. The Volumes already published have been added to the List of Books recommended by the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, and will be found to contain numerous practical Illustrations of the Holy Scriptures-Familiar Letters on the History of England-Useful Instructions in Gardening and Agriculture-together with a great variety of Miscellaneous In

In prosecution of this plan, we earnestly call upon those of our countrymen who are favourable to the spread of plain knowledge in this most interesting branch of science, to assist us by the communication of such facts as fall within their observation.

A total change having taken place in the Editorship of THE TOWN Newspaper, the following observations are respectfully submitted to the Subscribers and Public generally.

It is now placed under the direction of a gentleman of long experience in all that relates to public affairs, of intimate sc quaintance with the several branches of the Periodical Press, and who has the means of procuring the assistance of the most distinguished writers-in Politics, Literature, Art, and Science -throughout the kingdom.

It will thus receive all that talent and knowledge can furnish on topics of universal interest to the popular mind. While, on the one hand, it will support whatever is essential to good government, in accordance with the principles of the Constitution, as reformed and established on the basis that all power emanates from the nation,-it will, on the other, fearlessly oppose whatever has a tendency to sacrifice the general good to mere experiment or rash innovation. Allying itself with no party, and equally ready to condemn that which threatens to subvert the throne of endanger the rights of the subject, it will endeavour to bold an even balance between the conflicting elements of despotism and anarchy-that authority may deserve respect and obedience secure prosperity.

It will be assiduously sought to render The Town what its name denotes-an emporium of all the intellectual wealth, in every branch of knowledge, that originates with, or is poured into, the greatest capital of the world. The Town will tell the Country what it ought to know, as an essential part of the body politic, having a vital sympathy with the central reservoir of its mental and moral health.

The Town will be in fact and in every sense of the word, a NEWS paper. A general energy and activity will be displayed throughout its columns-in collecting and arranging all that is important or interesting in the daily Journals, so as to compress the pith of many into one, and place before the reader the events of the week, accompanied by such remarks as shall appear either judicious or necessary.

All topics that may and ought to procure its exclusion from Families will be carefully aroided. While treating plainly and boldly of public men and public measures, its columns will never give publicity to matters that exclusively concern private life. The industry and resources of the Editor will be manifested by the numbers as they appear. Sources of original and early in formation have been opened to him, such as are rarely accessible to conductors of a Weekly Paper.

Published on Sunday Morning (an Edition for the Saturday's post), at the Office of The Town, Burleigh-street (corner of) Strand, where orders may be forwarded, or through any Newsagent in Town or Country.

Part I. of the POLITICAL MAP OF ENGLAND, engraved on steel, and brilliantly coloured, is now ready for delivery, gratis, to those who have paid their quarter's subscription to The Town, the only way in which this important and useful work can be ad

Being Translations from the celebrated French Work,

LE LIVRE DES CENT-ET-UN. "The reading world in England is probably acquainted by report, or by some extracts published in that well-conducted Literary Journal, the Atheneum, with the existence of a popular work in Paris, entitled Livre des Cent-et-Un...Three volumes, containing a judicious selection from the original papers, have just made their appearance in an English dress; and we think the case, the gaiety, the wit, the talent, which characterize most of the papers, the pathos and the satire, which mingle as occasional ingredients, and the picture of Paris as it is and as it has been, which the work collectively affords, will secure it an auspicious reception here."-The Times.

"One of the most entertaining works ever issued from the Paris press."-Court Journal.

"The manners of the Parisians, from the Courtier to the Bourgeois-from the Chaussee d'Antin to the Marais-the institutions of Paris, from her Foundling Hospital to her Morgue,— are alike painted with great boldness of effect and wonderful truth and minuteness of detail."-The Alfred.

"A most admirable commentary on the present state of Parisian literature and society. We wish we could communicate a tithe of the amusement and pleasure it has given us. There is scarcely a page that does not bear upon it some characteristic trait of our gallant, lively, sensitive, wayward neighbours. The translator has done his duty faithfully, and with a spirited taste. He could not have adopted a better groundwork than the portion of the work which appeared from time to time in the Atheneum, a Journal now distinguished as much for its admirable resources as for its honesty."-True Sun.
