OD gave to Adam a law, as a covenant of works, by which he bound him and all his pofterity to perfonal, entire, exact and perpetual obedience; promifed life upon the fulfilling, and threatened death upon the breach of it; and endued him with power and ability to keep it2.

For when the Gentiles which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, thefe having not the law, are a law unto themselves. Which fhew the work of the law written in their hearts, their confcience alfo bearing witnefs, and their thoughts the mean while accufing, or elfe

Wherefore, as by one man fin entered into the world, and death by fin, and fo death paffed upon all men, for that all have finned.-For as by one man's difobedience many were made finners; fo by the obedience of one, fhall many be made righteous. See alfo Gal. 3 IC, 12. Eccl. 7. 12. and Job 28. 28.

III. Befide this law, commonly called moral, God was pleased to give to the people of Ifrael, as a church under age, ceremonial laws, containing several typical ordinances, partly of worship, prefiguring Chrift, his graces, actions, sufferings and benefits"; and partly holding forth

liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be bleffed in his deed. James 2. 8, 10, 11, 12. If ye fulfil the royal law, according to the fcripture, Thou fhalt love thy neighbour as thyfelf, ye do well-for whofoever fhall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. c Mat. 22. 37, 38, 39, 40. Jefus faid unto him, Thou

fhalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy foul, and with all thy mind.-This is the first and great commandment -And the fecond is like unto it, Thou fhalt love thy neighbour as thyfelf.-On these two commandments, hang all the law and the prophets. Exod. 20. 3 to 18.

III. d Heb. 10. I. Gal. 4. 1, 2, 3. Now I fay, that the heir as long as he is a child differeth nothing from a fervant, though he be lord of all:

IV. To them also, as a body politic, he gave fundry judicial laws, which expired together with the ftate of that people, not obliging any other, now, further than the general equity thereof may require".

VI.
