Gisburne or Gysburgh Priory, in Yorkshire.

ROBERT DE BRUS, by the counsel and admonition of Pope Calixtus the IId. and Thurston archbishop of York, founded and amply endowed this priory in the 29th Hen. Ist. A. D. 1129, for Canons of the Order of St. Austin, to the honor of the blessed Virgin Mary.

It

appears from the Rolls of Parliament of the 18th Edw. Ist. that this Monastery having been burnt by accident, and all the books, relics, and goods destroyed, King Edward granted to the Priory and Convent, upon their petition, a licence to appropriate the Churches of Esington, Bermingham, and Heselerton, of which they had the advowsons; the appropriation however does not seem to have taken effect.

VOL. VI.

In 1375, 49th Edward the Third, the King granted his licence to the Prior and Convent to inclose and embattle the walls of this Priory.

King Henry the Fourth granted them the privileges of frankpledge, waif, strays, return of writs, &c.

Dugdale and Stevens have been very copious in their collections of Instruments relating to this Priory, and Burton has appropriated fourteen pages of the Monasticon Eboracense to the alphabetical list of places wherein their possessions lay. All of these will be found enumerated in the charters and Ministers' Accompts.

Burton, and the Excerpts from the York Registers in the Harleian Library have supplied the following List of the 2 M

The Site was granted ult. Octob. 4th Edw. VI. to Sir Thomas Chaloner and his heirs. Graves in his History of Cleveland, p. 421, gives a description of Gisburne Priory as sent in a Letter to Sir Thomas Chaloner soon after he became proprietor of the Site.
