Derley Priory, in Derbyshire.

TANNER calls this Monastery Little Derby, Derlega, or Darley. He says Robert de Ferrariis, second Earl of Derby, partly out of some of the crown monies granted him by King Henry I. or King Stephen, and partly out of his own estate, founded a religious House near the town of Derby, dedicated to St. Helen: but pretty early in the next reign the greatest part of these canons, and their endowment, were translated to Little Derby, a place not far off, situated on the river Derwent, which was given them by Hugh the priest, dean of Derby, whereon an Abbey of the Order of St. Austin was built to the honor of the blessed Virgin Mary.

The Appendix to the present Account contains a large body of the Charters granted to this Monastery; to which the Reader is referred.

The Abstract of the Valor of this House in the 26th Hen. VIIIth will be found below.c

Cole has given a sketch of what he considers to have been the ARMS of this Monastery, viz. Arg. 5 horse-shoes sa. 3, 2, and 1. studded with gilt nails.

The SITE of this House was granted in the 32d Hen. VIIIth to Sir William West.

A CHARTULARY of Derley Abbey, imperfect at the beginning, occurs at fol. 39. of the Cottonian MS. Titus C. ix. written in different hands, but chiefly of the fourteenth century.a

Dr. Farmer, the Master of Emanuel College, Cambridge, formerly possessed a Chartulary of Derley Abbey, a thin Quarto of twenty-one leaves on vellum. Cole, among his Manuscripts preserved in the British Museum, vol. xxi. p. 154 to 186. has a transcript of this Register. The Deeds amount to a hundred and twelve in number; Cole's transcript, however, omits the names of the Witnesses to the different Instruments.b

Appendant to the Harleian Charter 44 D. 18, a lease of a farm at Chylswyll Notts, is a large portion of an Impression from the SEAL of Derley Abbey, oval, in red wax. The Virgin seated, with the Infant in her lap, appear in the area. All that remains of the Inscription is, . . . . . ILLVM: SANTE: MARIE: DE: D... .. The date of the Instrument to which it belongs is 27 Hen. VIII. In another broken Impression, attached to the Surrender in the Augmentation Office, DERLE appears to be the last word.

Some walls and out-houses, the latter converted into cottages, are all that now remain of the Buildings of DERLEY Abbey.

38. Confirmatio ejusdem de decimis et de ij. marc. annui redditus de ecclesia de Uttok. et de ij. marc. annuis et dimid. de ecclesia de Brailisford, ibid.

39. Confirmatio ejusdem Capituli de taxatione vicariarum nostrarum, fol. 164 b.

The ancient part of this Chartulary is separated into divisions, marked with the letters of the alphabet, from A to P. The Charters in them are in many instances relating to smaller portions of land, burgages, &c. in the several places.

There is a Memorandum amongst them in the shape of a record, which illustrates what seems to have been a very ancient custom, that the body of John Heriz of Gonaldeston was not suffered to be buried, till his executors had satisfied the abbat of Darley for the tythes of his under-wood in Wynnefeld, which were unpaid and detained, A.D. 1330, cart. 63, p. 170.
