WILLIAM CHEYNEY, de Querceto, or Caineto, founded a Priory of Canons of the Order of St. Austin, as early as the reign of King Stephen, in the Church of St. Mary at East Rudham; which, about the beginning of the reign of Henry the Third, was removed to the extremity of the parish, eastward, to a place called Cokesford, which was also dedicated to the blessed Virgin.

John de Caineto's confirmation of various donations to this House, with Hervey Belet's grant of the manor of Rudham, will be found in the Appendix.

A fair here was granted to the Prior in the 11th of Henry the IIId, to be held upon the feast of the translation of St. Thomas the Martyr, and two following days; which was confirmed in the 35th Hen. III.a

In the 3d and 15th Edw. I., the Prior had the lete and free warren, with a free market on Mondays, and a fair yearly on the vigil and day of St. Matthew the apostle: and in the 27th of the same reign, a three week court, which extended to the manor of West as well as East Rudham.b

John Matthew, prior, granted April 30th, 20th Henry VIII. to Thomas Duke of Norfolk, the manor of Rilverston belonging to this priory, the Convent being in debt to the King, and the Duke covenanting to discharge the same.

C

Mr. Taylor, in his Index Monasticus, enumerates the following names of the many benefactors to this House :Sir William de Cheney; Anne Cheney; Hervey Beleth or Belet, 1181; Sir Peter de Alto Bosco, or Hautboys, 1199; Margaret de Cheney or Cressey, 1217; Nicholas de Burmere, temp. Hen. III.; Anne Verdun; Roger de Broom, 1249; William de Rothing, 1288; Geoffrey Lord Say, 1294; Sir Robert de Ufford, 1316; Cecilia his widow, daughter of Robert de Valoines, 1316; the Lady Maud de Toney, 1325; Robert de Broom, about 1350."d

The continuator of Blomfield has preserved several notices of the minor possessions of this House, to which the Reader is referred. He says the Canons, beside the Prior, were eight in number.

The following List of the

PRIORS of COKESFORD

is chiefly taken from Blomfield.

MATTHEW DE CAINETO was the first Prior.

HEREBERT or HUBERT occurs t. Ric. I. and 4 Hen.

JOHN, 34th and 41st Hen. III.

WILLIAM DE HEMPTON elected A.D. 1315.
JOHN THORP died in 1342.

JOHN DE WALSINGHAM elected in 1404. Edmund de SNETESHAM Occurs in 1430. JOHN DE DEREHAM was chosen in 1438. Edmund DE SNETESHAM was again elected upon Dereham's death in 1449.

JOHN WICKINGHAM succeeded. He resigned in 1463; when

JOHN KNOLLYS, alias CLEMENT, was elected; and, on his death in 1478,

HENRY MILEHAM was elected, and occurs Prior in 1498. Willis calls him JOHN MILEHAM.

him

THOMAS Was Prior in the 21st of Hen. VIII. and after

JOHN ADAMSON.

JOHN MATTHEWS occurs Prior in 1534. He subscribed with nine others to the king's supremacy: and had a pension granted to him, at the Dissolution, of 15l. per annum. Willis speaks of Adamson as the last Prior, and says that he had the pension.f

King Henry the Eighth, on the 9th of May, in his 29th year, gave the manor of East Rudham, with the Site of the Priory of Cokesford, and the impropriate rectory and patronage of the vicarage, to Thomas Howard, Duke of Norfolk. In the 21st Elizabeth, Philip Howard, Earl of Arundel, son to the said duke, had license to alienate it to Sir Roger Townshend, whose immediate heir, the Right Hon. George Lord Viscount Townshend, succeeded to it. The property is at present vested in the trustees of the Marquis of Townshend.

The Abbey or Priory Church of Cokesford was standing in the reign of James the First.

The Minister's Accompts of this religious House being deficient in the Augmentation Office, by reason of its possessions having been granted immediately after the Suppression, temp. Hen. VIII. to the Duke of Norfolk, an abstract of the Return 26 Hen. VIII. is given in its room.

The Editors of the present Volumes have had no opnastery in the possession of Lord Townshend's trustees.

HUGH DE ELMHAM, 14 Edw. I. Willis speaks of portunity of examining the REGISTERS of this MoHenry de Elmham, t. Hen. IV.

Bourn, formerly Brunne Priory, in Lincolnshire.

BALDWIN FITZ GILBERT, says Tanner, in or before the year 1138, settled here an Abbat and Canons of the Order of St. Austin. His charter, bearing this date, is recited in an Inspeximus of the 1st Edw. III. copied in the Appendix to the present Account." Another charter, printed by Dugdale, relates to the possessions of this House at Chichester. Tanner says, herein were maintained eleven

The Lansdowne Manuscript 255, fol. 12 b. contains the Coat of ARMS of this House, a sword between two keys, exactly similar to the Coat which Bishop Tanner gives to Bromere in Hampshire.

The Reversion of the Site and demesne of this House was granted in the 30th Hen. VIIIth, 21 Dec. to Richard Cotton of Bedhampton, Johanna his wife, and their heirs." Some small Remains of Bourn Priory are still in existence.
