MONASTICON ANGLICANUM.

Witham Priory, in Somersetshire.

WITHAM, or the Charterhouse in Selwode, is said, in Leland's Collectanea, to have been at first a Nunnery; but it is more certain that upon the Carthusian Monks coming over into England, A.D. 1181, this was the first House of that Order, built and endowed by King Henry II. to the honour of the blessed Virgin, St. John Baptist, and All Saints. The Alien Priories of Spectesbury in Dorsetshire, Monk's Tofte in Norfolk, and Warmington in Warwickshire, were granted, the two first by King Henry V. the last by King Henry the Sixth, to the Monks of this House, to which the CHARTER HOUSE On Mendip in Somersetshire was also a Cell. The Foundation Charter of King Henry II. is given in the Appendix ; together with an Inquisition relating to the same taken in the 44th Hen. III.; the Pension List to the Monks at the Dissolution ;d and an Abstract of the possessions of the House as they appear in the Ministers' Accompts of the 31st Hen. VIII.

The following names of

PRIORS of WITHAM

occur in Cole's Manuscript Collections:f
ST. HUGH, afterwards bishop of Lincoln.

JOHN PESLIR, 39th Hen. VI. A.D. 1460.
RICHARD, A.D. 1510.

JOHN MICHELL, the last prior, el. 1536.

On May 20th, 1459, the bishop of Bath and Wells granted a licence to this Priory for a baptismal font to be

erected "in capella de le Frery," with directions to William the suffragan bishop of Sidon, to dedicate their churchyard." In Pope Nicholas's Taxation this House occurs by the name of the Carthusian Priory of Selwode, its revenues in Witham being valued at 30%.1

In the 26th Hen. VIII. the gross revenue of this House amounted to 2277. 1s. 8d.; the net income to 2157. 15s.*

The Site was granted in the 36th Hen. VIII. to Ralph Hopton; it now belongs to the duke of Somerset, by purbefore bought the estate of William Beckford, esq. chase from Dr. Trenchard and Mr. Webb, who had shortly

NO REGISTER of this Monastery is at present known to exist.1

The COMMON SEAL of this Priory is appendant to the Surrender in the Augmentation Office, and represents our Saviour on the Cross, between two female figures, under a rich canopy, in base under a niche flanked by masonry, an abbot with his crosier. Legend, s. cōE . DOMVS. BE. MARIE. D' WITHAM. ORDINIS. CARTHVS.

Collinson says the ruins of the Monastery were taken down about the year 1764, excepting a small part connected with the east end of the church. A farm-house and another building have been erected on the site, by which it appears to have been an extensive edifice; the dormitory was erected in the time of Bishop Beckington. Since Collinson's time the remains have become very trifling.

NUM. II.

Inquisitio Prioratus de Witham.

SOMERSETE.

fuit hæc inquisitio.

[Rot. antiq. Harl. N. 23.]

Anno regni regis Henrici xliiij. capta

Priory of Henton, called also Atrium Dei, and Locus Dei, in Somersetshire.

WILLIAM LONGESPE earl of Salisbury gave the manor of Hethrop, in Gloucestershire, A. D. 1222, to certain monks and brethren of the Carthusian Order, as

signed part of his revenues toward the building of a monastery for them there; and by his Will, made A. D. 1225, he bequeathed to them church-plate, vestments, certain

reliques, and a stock of cattle." But these Religious, after some few years' stay, not liking their habitation, prevailed with the countess Ela, the relict of their founder, to remove them to Henton, in Somersetshire; where, in her park, A.D. 1227, she began a monastery for them, which she finished in 1232, and dedicated to the honour of the blessed Virgin Mary, St. John Baptist, and All Saints.b

King Henry the Third confirmed the Privileges of this

House in the twenty-fourth year of his reign: and a bull of Privileges was granted to it in 1245, by Pope Innocent the fourth.d

The temporalities of this Priory as returned in Pope Nicholas's Taxation, A. D. 1291, were, "In Chynton, 41. 10s. In Norton Comitis, 127. In Henton, 24l. 15s.,” making a total of 41l. 5s.

Collinson says, the monks here had, by various Grants, lands in Hinton, Wellow, East Wick, Peglinch, Norton, Lullington, Iford, Freshford, Wordwick, Woodborough, Whiteoxmead, and many other places. King Richard the Second gave them a hogshead of wine yearly out of the port of Bristol; and King Henry the Fifth a charter of free warren in the manors of Hinton and Norton.h

In the 26th Henry VIII. this Priory was valued in the gross at 2627. 12s., the net income amounted to 2481. 19s. 2d.

Several Letters from this Priory addressed to King Henry VIII. and his Privy Council, before the Dissolution, are to be found in the Chapter House at Westminster.

Lord Arundell, from a Deed dated in 1524, has for its subject the intention of its foundress, Ela countess of Salisbury, who dedicated the Priory to the honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. John Baptist, and All Saints. The Seal has for its Legend these words, SIGILLVM. DOMVS. LOCI. DEI. DE. HINTON. ORDĪS. CARTVSIE'SIS.

Collinson says, "The present Manor-house of Hinton was erected out of the ruins of the Abbey, of which several parts, such as the chapel, out-chapel, charnel-house, and granary, are still remaining." This was in 1791.
