Priory of St. Thomas, at Stafford.

TANNER, in the Text of the Notitia Monastica, calls this a Priory of Black Canons built by Richard Peche, bishop of Coventry and Litchfield, about the year 1180, to the honor of St. Thomas the Martyr, viz. Becket of Canterbury."

In the Notes, he says, "There is reason to think, from the charter of Gerard Stafford, fil. Brieni," that HE was the true founder, and brought these canons hither from Darby or Darley, and fixed them here upon land which he held of the bishop of Litchfield, as chief lord; and from thence might compliment him with the title of founder." It is observable, Tanner adds, that the Litchfield Annals, both in the Monasticon, and in the Anglia Sacra,d only say that this bishop founded this Church "de episcopio." No doubt

Tanner gives the date 1180, because Becket did not die till 1170. b See the Charter in the Appendix to the present Account, Num. II. e Former edit. vol. iii. P. i. p. 218. d Vol. i. p. 435.

but he was a great encourager of the building of this Monastery, and had a great liking to it; for, when he resigned his bishoprick, he became a canon here, ended his days, and was buried here: but Gerard seems to be more likely to have been the real founder."

Erdeswick, and Loxdale in his MS. Collections for Staffordshire, are of the same opinion with Tanner. The latter says, "However this may be, the bishop was certainly a great benefactor to the place: to him they owe all their lands on the south side of Sow, with the churches of Baswick, Acton, and Bednall, and perhaps Charnes. Robert de Ferrars, Earl of Derby, gave the canons here two mesuages in Chartley, and the advowson of the church of Stow.s

Tanner's References to Manuscripts and Records concerning this Priory are below.

There are no Ministers' Accompts of this Priory in the Augmentation Office. The Valor of the 26th Hen. VIIIth

has therefore been abstracted in its room.b

ROBERT WYTHELL was the last Prior.

The Editors are obliged to their friend Mr. Hamper for an Impression of the COMMON SEAL of this Priory, 12 Hen. VI. It is oval, on red wax, and as it represents a bishop, with his mitre and episcopal staff, the probability is it was intended for the founder, Richard Peche, bishop of Coventry and Litchfield. The Legend is, SIGILL. COE.
