Written by Roald Dahl this book is absolutely one of my favorites. I personally have read the book and watched the movie several times. I even went to see Matilda the Musical. This is such a great story that teaches children to have courage and to stand up for what they believe in. Matilda tells the story of a little girl who was born into a family that does not love her. This family doesn’t even notice that their little girl is brilliant. She loves books and loves to read. One day she asks her father if she can go to school. At first he doesn’t believe that she is even old enough for school, but he decides to bring her school. This school is not what Matilda had imagined, but for her she was happy just to be there. The principal of the school, Miss Trunchbull, is evil and mean. She scares the children and at some points in the story even tries to hurt them by throwing them in the chokie and making a boy eat an entire chocolate cake. Although Miss Trunchbull is not nice, Matilda’s teacher is amazing and falls in love with Matilda. Matilda soon discovers that she has the power to move objects with her mind and she uses these powers to her advantage to get back at her parents and Miss Trunchbull. There is a happy ending for Matilda and her teacher. Children can easily relate to this story since it mainly takes place at a school and the characters are children their own age. This book’s awards include: the Federation of Children’s Book Groups Award and it was voted the “Nation’s Favorite Children’s Book” in BBC Bookworm Poll.

Roald Dahl does it again as he takes his readers on a journey through the life of Matilda. Through the themes and meanings, children are sure to learn a thing or two about karma. This adventurous book is great for readers and children of all ages to experience a world of magic. Growing up Matilda never felt like she fit in with her family but as she grows up to learn that she has special powers, she uses them for good and changes her life around. The use of language and descriptive imagery brings magic alive to where readers will wish that they had special powers too!
