THE LITERARY PANORAMA FOR DECEMBER 1806.

ADVERTISEMENTS.

On JANUARY 1, 1807, will be commenced a Monthly Tublication on a Plan entirely new, entitled,

Records of Literature,

DOMESTIC AND FOREIGN,

Price Is. each Number.

TO present a general View of the Progress of Literature, Science, and of the Arts, is the particular Purpose of none among the numerous periodical Publications of the Day: In each of them this important Object is confined to an inferior and limited Department: Hence the Student who is desirous of acquiring full and satisfactory Information relative to the general Advancement of Knowledge, is under the Necessity of recurring to a tedious Multiplicity of Miscellaneous Journals, and must at length relinquish the fruitless Search, dissatisfied and disappointed. The Object of the present Undertaking is to obviate this Inconvenience, by exhibiting a comprehensive Survey of the State of Letters, under the following Sections:

--

1. Correct INFORMATION relative to the proposed Object, Size, and Price of all Works announced, at home or abroad.

2. On their Publication, a succinct Account of their CONTENTS will be offered in regular Course: Occasional Abstracts of or Extracts from the most interesting and important, will entiven our Pages, and afford to the Reader an Opportunity of forming an Opinion of their respective Merits.

3. The PRIZES proposed and distributed by Learned Societies, more particularly when they relate to Literary Subjects, will be regularly recorded. And,

4. A brief NECROLOGY will inform the Republic of Letters, of its Losses, as, sustained in the Decease of its more illustrious Members.

This Design embraces Music, Maps, Charts, Prints, and every Species of Information which may interest the Man of Science or the Man of Taste. A very extensive Connexion on the Continents of Europe and America, already formed, will ensure to this Work advantages of a most superior and decided Nature.

It will contain a complete Retrospect of the Labours of the Erudite in every Quarter of the Globe; will present a far more extensive View of the Progress of Learning, of Science, and of the Arts, than any extant; and, in fact, form

Works published by M. JONES,

PATERNOSTER Row.

The British Farmer's Cyclopædia.

Dec. 1, 1806. AGRICULTURE. This Day was published, Part IV. Price 10s. 6d. (Part I. published on the 1st of August), of an entire new Work, dedicated to his Grace the Duke of Bedford, entitled,

The BRITISH FARMER'S CYCLOPÆDIA, or Complete Agricultural Dictionary; including every Science and Subject dependant on, or connected with improved modern Husbandry.

Every subsequent Part to be published on the first Day of each successive Month, and the Whole completed in Twelve Parts, illustrated by elegant Engravings, beautifully coloured; descriptive of the improved Breeds of British Live Stock, Farming Implements, &c. drawn by Craig, and engraved by M'Kenzie, &c.

By THOMAS POTTS, Farmer. Published by M. JONES, and sold by all Booksellers in the United Kingdom.

In proposing this Work, it is the intention of the Proprietors to offer to the Public the essential practical parts of every thing hitherto written on the subject of Agriculture up to the present moment.

The many works recently published for the use of the Farmer, will be found to contain much matter, not only not new in itself, but by far too theoretical and speculative for the practical Agriculturist Theory and speculation may be amusing to the Philosopher and Chymist, but the Farmer must be guided by facts alone, founded on the solid basis of long experience. For his use, therefore, this work is undertaken; incorporated with such valuable materials, as have been assiduously procured from the most unquestionable authorities; at the same time rejecting every

See Sir John Sinclair's Observations on this subject, Farmer's Magazine, vol. ii. p. 388.

thing which does not bear the stamp of genuine validity.

As Agriculture is now, most fortunately for this country, encouraged, and with scientific eagerness pursued, as well by men of the greatest talents and property as by the farmer, every thing which tends to facilitate its advancement will, in some measure, deserve their patronage; and, as the BRITISH FARMER'S CYCLOPEDIA is undertaken solely with this motive, inasmuch as it instantly presents at one view the very essence of every thing written on each par ticular article, it is not any great presumption to suppose, that it cannot fail to enjoy a great share of public favour.

There are many sciences so intimately connected with agriculture, that they cannot be passed over without slightly noticing them, wherever strictly necessary for the elucidation of any particular subject; this will, however, always be done with a close attention to brevity.

This work includes every science and subject dependant on, or connected with improved modern husbandry; such as the Breeding, Feeding, and Management of Live Stock of every kind; the Prevention and Cure of Diseases; the modern Art of Farriery; Cure of the Diseases of Dogs; the Culture and Management of Fruit and Forest Trees; a concise Gardener's Calendar; the perfect Management of Bees, of Cider, of Malt Liquor, and made Wines; and every other thing constituting a part of rural Economy, and interesting to the Farmer, the Country Gentleman, and the Sportsman.

In the plan which is thus submitted to the public, the great aim will be to supply those acknowledged defects which exist in 4 greater or less degree in most books written on rural affairs t; and to form the most use. ful and complete Farmer's Library in the smallest compass, and at the least expense,

one of which will regularly appear on the first day of every month.

II. The whole will be comprised in twelve parts, price 10s. 6d. each.

III. The work will be elegantly printed in 4to. on a superfine wove paper, and upon an entire new type, cast for the purpose.

IV. Each part will contain 96 pages closely printed in double columns; each page containing nearly as much matter as four pages of any common printed 4to.

work.

V. Each part will be illustrated by six elegant engravings, finely coloured, descriptive of the improved breeds of British live stock, agricultural implements, grasses, &c. &c. executed by artists of the first eminence, from drawings by masters of known celebrity.
