STARKIE'S LAW OF EVIDENCE,

A Practical Treatise of the Law of Evidence, and Digest of Proofs in Civil and Criminal Proceedings. Third Edition, with very considerable Alterations and Additions. By Thomas Starkie, Esq., of the Inner Temple, one of Her Majesty's Counsel.

"There are now two general treatises on this extensive and intricate branch of the law, Mr. Starkie's and Mr. Phillipps's, of which it is not too much to say, that they excel all text books of the day in the combination of learning and research, with clear method and scientific precision. Mr. Phillipps's work, however, labours under this disadvantage, that it is confined to an examination of the general principles of Evidence, and does not treat of the rules applicable to particular subjects and actions, otherwise than as they illustrate those general principles. Mr. Starkie, on the other hand, reserving the first part of his work chiefly for the discussion of general principles, devotes two closely-printed volumes to a digest, alphabetically arranged, of the rules of evidence and the proofs applicable to particular subjects and actions. It is in this that the great practical superiority and utility of Mr. Starkie's book consists."- The Jurist. No, 269.

See Vice-Chancellor Knight Bruce's observations in Andrews v. Andrews, Times, March 15, 1845:

His Honour remarked, he had heard it said with some astonishment that a recent statute (the "Act for Simplifying the Transfer of Property") would render Mr. Fearne's book obsolete. He was not of that opinion; so far from it, that he thought the greater part of it, if not the whole, would still be of the very greatest possible moment to be understood by every lawyer."

LONSDALE'S STATUTE CRIMINAL LAW

By James J. Lonsdale, Esq., Barrister-at-Law (Secretary to the Criminal Law Commission).

"This volume, so far as the Statute Law is concerned, contains a complete code of the indictable offences and their punishments, recognized by the law of England. We have no hesitation in describing it as the most perfect work of the kind ever issued from the press. It contains the only digest of punishments we have ever seen, and, on this account alone, the author is entitled to the thanks of the legal public. It also possesses an authority beyond the generality of modern legal publications, having received the sanction of the Criminal Law Commissioners. The notes are copious, and the arrangement the best that could have been adopted, both for reference and as regards conciseness. In conclusion, we recommend Mr. Lonsdale's book to the notice of all magistrates and others engaged in the administration of the criminal law, as one which they should not be without."-Jurist, Dec. 7, 1839.
