BY HENRY R. SCHOOLCRAFT,

Assisted by a number of literary and scientific gentlemen in this country and Europe.

The above title exhibits so fully the scope of the proposed publication, that little more is demanded to apprise the public of its object. The reputation of the Editor, as a writer, and the extraordinary advantages he has enjoyed for becoming familiar with the character, history and habits of numerous Indian tribes are such as to afford the highest assurance of his ability to accomplish, in the most satisfactory manner, the important and interesting work which he has undertaken. Originality and freshness of. description will be studied in each department of the work. A large portion of what relates to the North American tribes will be supplied by the author's

personal knowledge. A succinct account will be given of each tribe and band, together with biographical sketches of their principal chiefs, warriors and orators. Separate articles will be prepared illustrative of peculiar and distinguishing traits of Indian character, and of important topics relating to Aboriginal history; and in all cases where information is derived from published works, its accuracy will be tested by persons who have devoted their attention to the subjects discussed.

Were the list completed, it would afford the undersigned pleasure to introduce the names of several distinguished philologists and writers, both at home and abroad, whose co-operation in this work has either been secured or is confidently relied on. These will be announced in the progress of the publication, for the speedy commencement of which a large amount of the materials has been collected and, in part, prepared. It will be undertaken with vigor, as soon as the success of the subscription shall be ascertained, and no effort will be spared to accomplish the high object of its conception, and to render it a work alike creditable to the age and just to the interesting and noble branches of the human race to whom it is devoted.

It need only be added that to obtain the information which these volumes will supply,-without reference to the original portions of them,-would require the purchase of a distinctive library, embracing many rare and expensive works.

TERMS.

The work is proposed to be issued in 8 successive Nos. at $150 per No., which, together, will constitute two volumes, Royal Octavo, of 700 pages each, at $6 per volume.

Gentlemen desiring to encourage so noble and expensive an undertaking, and to possess themselves of the proposed work, are respectfully requested to forward their names, to the subscriber, at their earliest convenience, that the commencement of the work may not be unnecessarily delayed.

No demand will be made for payment until the delivery of the first No., which will be issued as soon as practicable after the requisite encouragement shall be obtained. A list of the names of the original subscribers will be appended to the last No. of the work.

GEO. A. PETERS, Agent for the Author, Brick Church Chapel, 36 Park Row, New-York.
