Stratigraphic Systems: Origin and Application

Front Cover
Academic Press, Dec 8, 1999 - Business & Economics - 700 pages
The statigraphic record represents the history of processes and events that occurred at the surface of the earth. Presently, there are no textbooks on the market that integrate physical, chemical, and biological processes to predict stratigraphic patterns. Visher's authoritative Stratigraphic Systems fills this niche. It outlines the principle stratigraphic concepts for exploration of hydrocarvon accumulations, with more than 700 illustrations. Can be used as a primary textbook for an undergraduate course in stratigraphy and sedimentation.

* CD-ROM features expert systems software for identifying or verifying stratigraphic intervals
* Provides historical and paleogeographic context for observations
* Conveniently organizes stratigraphic systems into basinal frameworks
* Incorporates statistical probability analysis, yet is not mathematically demanding
* Stresses an analytical, rather than a descriptive, approach to predicting temporal and areal stratigraphic patterns
* Includes more than 700 figures and tables

About the author (1999)

Dr. Glenn Visher has enjoyed many parrallel careers. After receiving his Ph.D. degree from Northwestern University, he joined Shell Oil Company as an Exploration Geologist. He continued his career as a Research Scientist at Sinclair Research, Inc. For 15 years he was first an Associate Professor and then a Professor at the University of Tulsa. He has taught seminars around the world for thousands of participants, commencing in 1968, and still continuing. In 1979, he formed a petroleum exploration company and has been operator and producer of petroleum until the present. He has been honored as the organizer of professional symposia at national and international meetings, and is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Geological Society of America. He has published many papers, some with more than 500 citations. In 1984, PennWell published his book, Exploration Stratigraphy, and a Second Edition was published in 1990. Collectively these books have sold more than 4500 copies.Presently, he is writing books about his inter-cultural experiences around the world. He recently published Human Values: From the Greeks to Modern Times and is preparing another book, The Origin of Human Values: A Scientific Analysis.
