conflict. According to a prophecy of very ancient date: "Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried: but the wicked shall do wickedly and none of the wicked shall understand, but the wise shall understand." Indiscriminate censure prevails too much in the opposing parties; but who shall bring them to a reconciliation on their mutual interests? The child, that has arrived to years of discretion, will not be treated by a wise parent as he was during his minority.

Interdum vulgus recte videt, est ubi peccat.

which it has preserved in all the subsequent editions, and which it is hoped that it will not forfeit in the present. The Proprietors, indeed, trust that the prescnt edition will be found to pos sess peculiar claims to public approbation, as the old matter has not only been diligently revised and carefully retrenched where it was erroneous or redundant, but a considerable portion of new matter has been introduced, in order to accommodate he work to the more advanced state of geographical science, and to omit no information respecting any part of the world, upon which the busy industry of modern travellers has thrown any additional and interesting light.

New information has been elaborately gleaned from all quarters where it could be found. A more perfect and accurate At'as has been added; and no pains and no ex ense have been spared to render this work superior to all similar publications, in the copiousness of its contents, and inthe moderation of its price.
