PREFACE.

The following little story owes its origin to the tedious hours of a temporary confinement to the sofa. If the perusal of it should afford any instruction, and as much pleasure to the young reader, as writing it did to the Authoress, she will be much gratified. She has endeavoured throughout the tale to convey some idea of the state of Mexico, at the time of the conquest by Cortes, of the justness of whose invasion, according to the rights of nations, she does not presume to give an opinion. But she cannot refrain from begging her little friends to look upon it, as a judgment sent
