MAT FOR A LAMP OR VASE.-This mat has | and laid on the covered foundation according to only been illustrated half its original size, but the dimensions can be easily regulated by those of the article intended to stand on it. The ma terials required for its execution are, Java canvas, green satin ribbon No. 4, narrow black silk braid with a pattern in white silk, green sewing and purse silk, gold twist and gold beads, cardboard and green sarsenet.

First cut out the foundation in cardboardtwo circular pieces will be required; these must be covered with green sarsenet and then seamed together. The green satin ribbon is then quilled

the illustration. Where it lies under the points of the star, it is tacked down plain without any fulness; the quillings are then ornamented with a cross in gold twist, and with four gold beads round the cross. The star at the top is cut out of Java canvas; a circle is described in the centre, with the narrow fancy black and white braid; the edges are bound with the same, and the space between the inner circle and the edge is worked with green silk and gold beads. The canvas thus ornamented is lastly sewn down firmly to the foundation of the mat.

An oval piece of cardboard 2 inches long, 1 inches wide, with a sheet of cotton wool over it, perfumed with essence of roses, is covered first with pink silk, then on the outside with a double piece of crape. The inner part of the rose is made in the following manner :-Cut a strip of the darkest pink crape 2 inches wide, fold it twice, so as to reduce it to one-third of its width, and with fine pink sewing-silk, run a waved line over it as seen on illustration, No. 2. Draw the silk tight, so as to form small scallops, and fasten this strip in rounds over the cushion

Fold each of these

The mate- manner until you have 7 left on the needle; rials required are 34oz. scarlet Eider yarn, oz. | raise these 7 and work back to the right-hand Andalusian wool the same color, or else part- side of the work. ridge. Two long bone crochet needles, No. 12 59th row-Take up 38, work back. Take up and No. 2. 32, work back. Raise 5 less each time until you Commence with No. 2 hook and the Eider have 8 on the needle; raise the first 3 of these, yarn. Make a chain of 63.

1st row-Take up all the loops and work back; this constitutes a row. The whole of the drawers are worked in square crochet, or crochet tricotée. To increase, take up the chain stitch between the 1st and 2d long loops at the begin ning of a row, and draw the wool through, the same between the 2 last loops at the end of the row. In decreasing, work the 2 first loops and the 2 last as one.

2d and 3d rows plain.

Work 26 more rows, increasing one stitch at each side of the work every other row. In the 30th, 31st, 32d, 33d and 34th, increase one at each side.

Then 3 rows plain.

Now work 16 rows, decreasing one at each side of the work every other row. Then 4 rows, decreasing at the left-hand side of the work every row, and every other row on the righthand side. Take care to do this every time you work these edges to the end of the work.

58th row-Take up all the loops, work back

work back. Then take up all the 38 loops (which you will find appear as if in different rows) and the rest of the loops to the left hand side of the work. Work back the whole row. Work 3 more rows, decreasing each row on the left hand side, and every other on the righthand side.

The last row is worked in double crochet as follows: *, take up the 1st long loop, draw the wool through, then through the 2 loops on the needle, take up the 2d and repeat in same manner. Fasten off at the end of the row. This forms half the drawers. For the other half, commence at the 1st row and work as before as far as the 55th row.

In the 55th and next 3 rows, and all successive rows, decrease on the right-hand side of the work every row instead of the left.

And in the 58th and 59th rows, reverse the order of working; that is, instead of working back 28 in the 58th row, take up 28 loops at the commencement of the row, and gradually diminish as in the working..

And in the 59th row, work back 38 instead of taking up 38 loops; finish as the other leg. When both legs are worked, crochet them together as if you were making a pair of drawers in linen. Then crochet a row of double crochet round each opening.

Put the two shortest sides together (if to fasten behind), and join to the other half, leaving one-third of the long side for the opening behind. Fasten off very securely. Work 2 rows of double crochet round the opening that is left. Join on the Andalusian wool, and with the fine needle commence at the top of the opening, holding the right-side of the work to you. Double crochet in the first loop, then D. C. the second and third loops together. D. C. in each stitch all through the remainder of the row until the last three stitches, which work as the three first. D. C. round the opening. Double crochet twice more all round the top and opening, and fasten off. Stitch the right-hand side of the opening

firmly over the left, as in plain drawers. Mount the top in a calico or elastic band.

Join the Andalusian wool at the seam at the bottom of the leg. Work a row of D. C., taking up every other stitch only; on this row work 5 more rows of D. C., taking up every stitch. If the gray wool is used for the drawers instead of a red frill, work these 6 rows in gray and fasten off. If a frill is liked, work as follows: After these 6 rows work the 7th row, * 5 chain, miss 2, 1 D. C. in next loop, * repeat. 8th-D. C., taking off each loop of 7th row. 9th-3 S. C. into 3 first loops, one in each loop; *6 chain; D. C. into centre D. C. of next loop; * repeat.

10th-D. C. into each stitch of last round.

11th-2 S. C. into D. C. of last round; * work in the centre D. C. of next loop, 3 long, 2 treble long, 1 chain, 2 treble long, 3 long; *repeat in the centre of next loop, fasten off neatly; work the other leg in the same manner. M. E. S.
