Marriages and Deaths:

dire not truft them together. This is the account we have from the country, and it is believed here. Nor is this to be wondered at, when the depreciation of the continental money confidered. A bufhel of wheat, which formaly fold for 6s. or 8s now fells for 50s or acow, that might be bought formerly for st will now coft 451. or sol, and all other things in the fame proportion, even fuch as the country fill affords. In fhort, the paper cancy itself must destroy the rebellion, if we, by our ill management, do not cherish and fupport it.

New-York, Nov. 24. By accounts from the country we learn, that Capt. Jofeph Brant, at the head of a ftrong party of loyalifts and Indians about the beginning of laft week, attacked and defeated a numerous bedy of rebels, Cherry-valley, in Tryon-county, and that he afterwards totally demolished that fet dement. This event has thrown the demapoques in the upper counties of this province into the greatest confternation: and Captain Brant is carrying devaftation along the western frontier, and daily expected to pay a visit to the town of Gofben, in Orange county.

The following notice appeared in the New Yark Gezette, of Nov. 21: To all gentlemen refugees, and others, who are inclined to fettle on any of his majesty's Bahama Islands ; bis excellency brigadier general Browne purpofing to fail immediately for his government, with a number of troops, as well for the protec tion of those islands, as for the fafety of its loyal inhabitants, will give every encouragement is his power to thofe who are defirous to retire thither during the rebellion. The falubrity of the climate of these islands, with the great advantages to be reaped in time of war, info well known that it is needlefs to fay more en the fubject; only as a further encouragement, his excellency the commander in chief ill order the neceffary provifions for their opage upon proper application-Land will be granted to thofe who apply for it.”

WE

our CORRESPONDENTS.

E return our thanks to the tranflator of Rousseau's Emilia, and could wifh that our whifpers had the fame effect on every one of our correfpondents of the fame defcription befides the above, we are favoured with the Series of Letters from the fame perfon, and shall infert both pieces in our

next.

We are forry to find by the author of the letters from F. Scudamore to Lady Saville, that the one prior to her laft was omitted, and that it was owing to fome overfight in the poft, as we can pledge our honours that it never came to our hands. This letter contained an account of Mr. Scudamore's illness, recovery, and departure for her father's house, with the death of her mother: and if the is poffeffed of any copy, it shall be published prior to that we are honoured with this month, as the interruption in the thread of the hiftory will be lefs confufed.

We are obliged to Urgaina likewife for intimating this difcovery. If the learned lady, who has favoured us with two letters from the French, will proceed in the feries, we fhall be obliged to her.

Among other pieces in profe, we are favoured with feveral Solutions to the Rebuffes in the Supplement, which we are obliged to poftpone, as the redundancy of public and temporary matter left us no room for them. We are obliged to Chrift. G-w for a Lift of Women's Names, to Maria Ciara for feveral Solutions, to Harriet Ophelia for Lift of Towns and Villages in Effex, to J. H. R. for Lift of young Ladies in or near Rochdale, to Juvenis for Reflections on the Awfulness of Death, to Amelia for a Solution of the Question relating to the Hole at the Top of Tia-Pors, which fhe feems to have mistaken, &c.

In poetry, we are favoured with Verfes on Winter, &c. by Amelia-To Mifs B, by Juvais-On a young Lady at Hull, by T. G. M. C. B.--To Mifs G-, by Armiger-An Acroflic, by a Conftant Reader-To a young Lady, by G. R-.-Paradife Regained, by J. F. F.-To Mrs. M-, by M. S-n. Solution of the extraordinary Mountain, by Harriet-The Wish, by Henrietta C-r. Epitaph on Mr. Garrick, by J. J-Damon and Delia, &c. by Mr. HawkinsSong, by Ti-b.-On the Death of a Lady's Linnet, by Henrietta Gr-Verfes written by a Lady in Affliction.-To Delia, by Eugenius-Ben's Soliloquy, by J. Wch.—A Sing in Score, the words by Mr. Smith, the mufic by Mr. Mafiot; with a prodigious number of others, which, though we cannot enumerate, we are under great obligations for.

We flatter ourselves that our readers will justly attribute the omiffion of our not noticing the taking the island of St. Lucia, (in the Weft Indies) and our recovering the province of Georgia, upon the continent of North America, as related in the London Gazette ordinary and extraordinary, to their very late appearance in this fhort month. In our next our readers will find thefe accounts at large. The fame caufe, we hope, will apologize for our not men tioning the happy delivery of the queen, and the birth of another prince, iu the proper department of the Magazine.
