O Caledonia! stern and wild,

Meet nurse for a poetic child!

Land of brown heath and shaggy wood,
Land of the mountain and the flood,
Land of my sires! what mortal hand
Can e'er untie the filial band
That knits me to thy rugged strand!

SCOTT.

PREFACE.

HE ILLUSTRATIONS in this volume are solely

the work of the eminent Artist whose name they bear. They have been drawn from direct observation and from nature,

and they are intended as far as possible to illustrate the more picturesque side of the landscape scenery of Scotland. The text will speak for itself. It has been selected from the poetical works of three strongly national Poets -Scott, Burns, and Ramsay. Whatever the distinct and individual merits of these Poets may be, it may be said of them, that they have all at least vied with each other in describing the beauties and singing the glories of their native land.
