An Act of Thanksgiving, being the Song of David, for the Morning.

[ocr errors]

SIng praifes unto the Lord, O ye Saints of his, and give thanks to him for a remembrance of his holinefs. For his wrath endureth but the twinkling of an eye, and in his pleasure is life: heavinefs may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning. Thou, Lord, haft preferved me this night from the violence of the fpirits of darkness, from all fad cafualties and evil accidents, from the wrath which I have every day deserved: thou haft brought my Soul out of hell, thou haft kept my Life from them that go down into the pit: thou haft fhewed me marvellous great kindness, and haft bleffed me for ever: the greatnefs of thy glo ry reacheth unto the heavens, and thy truth unto the clouds. Therefore fhall every good Man fing of thy praise without ceafing. O my God, I will give thanks to thee for ever. Allelujah.

Moft Holy and Eternal God, Lord and Sovereign of all the creatures, I humbly prefent to thy Divine Majefty my felf, my foul and body, my thoughts and my words, my actions and intentions, my paffions and my fufferings to be difpofed by thee to thy glory, to be bleffed by thy providence, to be guided by thy counfel, to be fanctified by thy Spirit, and afterwards that my body and foul may be received into glory: for nothing can perifh which is under thy cuftody; D

An Act of Repentance or Contrition.

FOR as for

as for me, I am not worthy to be called thy fervant, much less am I worthy to be thy fon; for I am the vileft of finners and the worst of men,a lover of the things of the world and a defpifer of the things of God [prond and envious, lufful and intemperate] greedy of fun and impatient of reproof, defirous to feem holy and negligent of being fo, tranfported with intereft, fool'd with prefumption and falfe principles, disturbed with anger, with a peevish and unmortified fpirit, and difordered by a whole body of fin and death. Lord pardon all my fins for my fweetest Saviour's fake: thou who didft die for me, Holy Fefus fave me and deliver me: referve not my fins to be punifhed in the day of wrath and eternal vengeance; but wash away my fins, and blot them out of thy remembrance, and purifie my foul with the waters of repentance and the blood of the crofs; that for what is paft thy wrath may not come out against me, and for the time to come I may never provoke thee to anger or to jealoufie. O juft and dear God, be pitiful and gracious to thy fervant. Amen.

The Prayer or Petition.

BLefs me, gracious God, in my Calling to fuch pur pofes as thou fhalt chufe for me, or employ me in: Relieve me in all my fadneffes, make my bed in my fickness, give me patience in my forrows, confidence

in thee, and grace to call upon thee in all temptations. O be thou my Guide in all my actions, my Protector in all dangers: Give me a healthful Body, and a clear Understanding, a fanctified and juft, a charitable and humble, a religious and a contented Spirit: Let not my Life be miferable and wretched, nor my name stained with fin and fhame, nor my Condition lifted up to a tempting and dangerous Fortune; but let my Condition be bleffed, my Converfation ufeful to my Neighbours, and pleafing to thee, that when my Body thall lie down in its Bed of Darknefs, my Soul may pass into the Regions of Light, and live with thee for ever, through Jefus Chrift. Amen.

Another Form of Prayer for the Morning.

In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghoft. Our Father, &c.

I.

Moft glorious and eternal God, Father of Mercy, and God of all comfort, I worship and adore thee with the lowest humility of my Soul and Body, and give thee all thanks and praise for thy infinite and effential glories and perfections; and for the continual demonftration of thy mercies upon me, upon all mine, and upon thy holy Catholick Church.

II.

Acknowledge, dear God, that I have deserved the greateft of thy wrath and indignation; and that if thou hadst dealt with me according to my deferving, I had now at this inftant been defperately bewailing my miferies in the forrows and horrours of a fad eternity. But thy mercy triumphing over thy juftice and my fins, thou haft ftill continued to me life and time of repentance; thou haft opened to me the gates of grace and mercy, and perpetually called upon me to enter in, and to walk in the paths of a holy life, that I might glorify thee and be glorified of thee eternally.

III.

BEhold, O God, for this thy great and unspeakable goodness, for the prefervation of me this night, and for all other thy graces and bleffings, I offer up my Soul and Body, all that I am, and all that I have, as a Sacrifice to thee and thy fervice; humbly begging of thee to pardon all my fins, to defend me from all evil, to lead me into all good, and let my portion be amongst thy redeemed ones in the gathering together of the Saints, in the Kingdom of grace and glory.
