The Hong Kong Post Office maintains agencies at the
undermentioned places in China:-Amoy, Canton,
Chefoo, Foochow, Hankow, Hoihow, Liu-kung-tau
(Wei-hai-wei), Ningpo, Shanghai Swatow.and Tientsin.
Only letters and postcards fully prepaid are sent viâ
Siberia.

Works of art (including photographs), ruled and
printed forms, account and manuscript books, blot-
ting pads, labels, sheet, card and block almanacs,
calendars of every description, diaries, cards in
general and picture books, and old newspapers in-
tended to be used as packing are liable to customs
duty, unless sent in small quantities by private
individuals for private use. Any such articles con-
sidered by the Indian Post Office to be merchandise
will be delivered only on payment of customs charges.
All articles of intrinsic value are liable to customs duty
in India, and must not be forwarded by letter post.
Prohibited Articles: Gold, silver, precious stones, jewel-
lery, &c., except in Insured boxes; coin; albums,
coffee, roasted or ground, or its substitute, playing
cards, growing plants and cuttings, saccharine,
tobacco, vanilla, saffron, feathers, perfumes, spirits,
patent medicines, chemicals, articles of apparel, and
many other articles.

Lithographs, engravings, photographs, maps, pictorial
cards, printed or manuscript books bound in ivory,
celluloid, pearl, mother-of-pearl, bone, tortoiseshell,
or other similar substances, or with metal orna-
mentation, must not weigh more than 100 grammes
(about 8 ounces). Newspapers, periodicals, and
illustrated journals, also separate printed sheets
(such as notices, circulars, proofs, sheets of music,
&c.), must not weigh more than 1,000 grammes
(2 lb. 3 oz.).

Sample Post.-The limit of weight is lower than 12 oz.
for many articles, e.g., tea (gross weight 50 grammes

14 oz.); cinnamon (75 grammes=24 oz.); cocoa,
chocolate, and preserves; needles, pins, and other
metal objects (100 grammes 3 oz.).

Japanese Saghallen (Karafuto).-The insured letter
system applies to the following places only :-
Gaukinourasukoe (Galkino-Vraskoe), Kushunkotan
(Korsakoff), Mauka and Uradimirofuka (Vladi-
mirofka).

Only letters and post-cards, fully prepaid, are sent via
Siberia.

The registration of packets containing coin, and the in-
surance or registration of packets containing gold,
silver, precious stones, jewellery, &c., is compulsory, (Grand Duchy)
and everything of value, except coin or bullion, is
liable to duty.

CAR

The insurance system is confined to letters for Am- MADAGAS-
batondrazaka,Ambohimahasoa, Ambositra, Analalava,
Andevorante, Aniverano, Ankazobe, Antananarivo,
Antsirabe, Brickaville, Diego Suarez, Fanovana,
Farafangana, Fianarantsoa, Fort Dauphin, Maeva-
tanana, Mahanoro, Maintirano, Majunga. Mananjari,
Manjahandriana, Maroantsetra, Marovoay, Mona-
manga, Moronoava, Ste. Marie de Madagascar,
Tamatave, Tulear, Vatomandry and Vohemar.

jewellery, &c.

Prohibited & Dutiable Articles: Same as Portugal.

MADEIRA

Insured letters are accepted for all places in Negri
Sembilan, Pahang, Perak and Selangor, except
Kuantan and Pekan in Pahang; but delivery is
effected from the undermentioned offices only:-
Batu Gajah, Ipoh, Kajang, Klang, Kuala Kangsar,
Kuala Kubu, Kuala Lipis, Kuala Lumpur, Parit
Buntar, Port Dickson, Port Swettenham, Raub,
Seremban, Tanjong Malim, Taipeng, Tapah, Teluk
Anson. In the case of insured letters for other
places, the addressees must arrange for them to be
at the nearest delivery office.

spirits and bhang.

The insurance system applies to letters for Saipan
only.
