Baron Steuben, Gov. St Clair, Samuel A. Otis, Roger Sherman, Gov. Geo. Clinton, Chancellor Livingston, WASHINGTON TAKING THE OATH AS PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, April 30, 1789, on the site of the present Treasury Building, Wall Street, New York City, AMERICAN HISTORY BY S. E. FORMAN AUTHOR OF "A HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES," "ADVANCED WITH MORE THAN 250 ILLUSTRATIONS NEW YORK THE CENTURY CO. PREFACE In this text I have told the story of America as I think it ought to be presented to beginners. Since children are always interested in the lives of the great, I have treated the subject on its biographical side. The story centers around the men who have been leaders in American life. But the book is more than a mere series of biographies; it is in a true sense a history of our country's growth. While preparing the Lessons I received valuable criticisms and suggestions from William B. Guitteau, Superintendent of Schools, Toledo, O.; George L. Aldrich, Superintendent of Schools, Brookline, Mass.; W. A. L. Beyer, State Normal School, Normal, Ill.; Oscar H. Williams, Indiana University, Bloomington, Ind. ; and Mrs. Frances W. Marshall, Assistant Editor of the St. Nicholas Magazine. For the assistance rendered by these gentlemen and by Mrs. Marshall I wish to express my sincere thanks. Washington, D. C. S. E. FORMAN.
