PECKWATER.

to form an Idea of the great Mind of Cardinal WOLSEY. In this Quadrangle are the Statues of Queen Anne, Cardinal Wolfey, and Bishop Fell; that of the Cardinal, by Francis Bird, in the South-eaft Corner is juftly admired as an excellent Piece of Workmanship.

The Great Quadrangle is 264 by 261 Feet in the Clear. The Hall, which takes up more than half the South Side, is confiderably elevated above the reft, and the whole finished with a Balluftrade of Stone. The South, Eaft, and Part of the Weft Sides, with the magnificent Kitchen to the South of the Hall, were erected by the Cardinal.

The Eaft and North Sides of this Quadrangle are taken up with the Dean's and four of the Canons Lodgings.

In the Year 1638, the North Side of the grand Quadrangle was begun. On the Reftoration, this Part of Building was refumed, by the Direction and Encouragement of Dr. Fell, then Dean of the College; and finished Anno 1665.

The Hall is by far the most magnificent Room of the Kind in Oxford, and perhaps one of the largest in the Kingdom. The Roof is framed of Timber curioufly wrought, and fo contrived, as to produce a very grand and noble Effect. There are near 300 Compartments in the Cornice, which are embellished with as many Coats of Arms carved and blazoned in their proper Colours.

At the upper End of the Hall there is an Afcent of three Steps which run through the whole Breadth; near which is a beautiful Gothic Window in a Recefs, that demands the Attention of the Curious.

This fuperb Room is beautified, and improved, by compleating and painting the Wainfcot and Roof, and the Addition of a great Number of Portraits of former Deans, Bishops, and other great Men, that were bred at the College, which are difpofed round the Room in the following Manner. Over

The Church of this College, which is the Cathedral of the Diocese, is on the Eaft of the Grand Quadrangle, a venerable Structure, originally the Church of St. Fridefwide's Monaftery. The Roof of the Choir is a beautiful Piece of Stone-work put up by Cardinal Wolfey, who alfo rebuilt the Steeple. The Eaft Window was painted by Mr. Price, fenior, of London, after a Defign of Sir James Thornhill, reprefenting the Epiphany. In the Dormitory, which is an Ifle on the North Side of the Choir, is the Tomb of St. Fridef-wide, who died A. D. 739. In the fame Place is a Window, curioufly painted, reprefenting St. Peter delivered out of Prifon by the Angel: Befide the principal Figures, there are a confiderable Number of Roman Soldiers in various fleeping Attitudes, admirably well drawn: And, though a very small Portion of the Glafs is ftained, the Colours are brilliant, and the Whole appears very lively. It was painted by J. Oliver, in his Eightieth Year, and given by him to the College in the Year 1700. In this and other Parts of the Church are fome Monu ments, no lefs remarkable for their elegant Lafcriptions than their beautiful Structure.

In the Tower are ten celebrated Bells, brought from Ofeney Abbey, as was the great Bell, called Tom, abovementioned.

In this Church Choir Service is performed every Day at Ten and Five; except on Sundays and Holidays, when it is at Eight in the Morning.

Three Sides of Peckwater Court are uniform, defigned by Dr. Aldrich, then Dean, no less famous for his Skill in Architecture, than for his Eminence in most other Branches of Knowlege. Each Side contains 15 Windows in Front. The lower Story is Ruftic, in which are three Entrances. The fecond Story, and the Attic above it are contained in the Height of the Ionic Order, which refts upon the Ruftic. Over the five Middle Windows in each Side is a beautiful Pediment, which pro
