MADAM, THE following Tales have no literary pretensions; and even their design, in which I feel assured of your approval, would scarcely render them worthy of a dedication. But among my motives for inscribing them to you, there is one, which will, I trust, in your estimation atone for the humble character of this little volume; and which, though less directly complimentary, will not be less interesting to you. It is, Madam, that while I am happy to join in the general tribute to those qualities of heart and understanding, with which you adorn your high station; I am also especially desirous, in these times, to seize every opportunity of doing an act of public justice to that illustrious and estimable prelate, to whom you are united.
