MADAM,

THE following Tales have no literary pretensions; and even their design, in which I feel assured of your approval, would scarcely render them worthy of a dedication. But among my motives for inscribing them to you, there is one, which will, I trust, in your estimation atone for the humble character of this little volume; and which, though less directly complimentary, will not be less interesting to you. It is, Madam, that while I am happy to join in the general tribute to those qualities of heart and understanding, with which you adorn your high station; I am also especially desirous, in these times, to seize every opportunity of doing an act of public justice to that illustrious and estimable prelate, to whom you are united. These Tales, if they have any circulation, will
