his Grace of Quiz, who, to do him justice, gave her a marriage portion of no less than one hundred thousand pounds.

This sum proved of infinite utility to the earl, whose circumstances, at the time of the union, were not totally unembarrassed.

His conduct since has been that of a truly affectionate husband; and, in every respect, so very exemplary, as to be worthy the imitation of most of his compeers.

For a short period he was detained prisoner in France; but we are happy to find that he has once more returned to his native land and family, and now resides near his father-in-law, whose follies and vices he constantly endeavours to restrain.

2- -'s Adventures at an ́Inn.

THE next, and a truly ridiculous affair in which the Duke of Quiz distinguished himself, was one that found its way into the Mug Pest, and the other

scandalous journals, as an anonymous

anecdote.

His grace pays an annual visit to his Se-tch estate, of which, in a former part of this work, we made mention.

In the course of one of his journies thither, he stopped to dine at a noted inn upon the northern road.

Just as his grace alighted at the door of this inn, a chaise, in which was a charming girl, whose appearance did not bespeak her above eighteen, drove up.

ness at first sight, and perceiving that she was unaccompanied, assiduously offered her his protection while she remained in the house.

The gallant offer was readily accepted of, and before night, which his grace determined to pass in the inn, the understanding between the lovely female and her protector became so perfect, that the former consented to occupy a chamber adjacent to that in which the duke proposed sleeping.
