PREFACE.

THE following pages are what they profess to be, the Chronicles of events in real life, that have furnished the groundwork of the fiction which covers them.

In reference to some of the sentiments attributed to the principal actors in "The Young Jew," " Passion," and The First Brief," the writer has to observe that they were necessary for the illustration and development of the respective characters. But she trusts that in no single instance has she departed from that duty of the Novelist which enforces respect

for morality, even while picturing the darkest phases of human passions. With this explanation the Author commits her first Prose Work of Fiction to the Public.
