Being Number II. of Vol. II. ART. I. Hiftory of Appleby, in Leicestershire. AVING in No. IX. of our last volume taken some notice of H this place, and promifed a more full account, we now un dertake to fullfil that engagement as far as we are able. This pleafant village is fituated part in Derbyshire, and part in Leicefter fhire. The furrounding country, though for the most part flat, is rich, pleafant and healthful. In point of ancient confequence as well as modern refpectability, it is perhaps exceeded by few places of its extent. The moft confpicuous account hitherto given of it, we find in Burton's hiftory of Leicestershire, as follows, Appleby Magna, in the hundred of W. Gofcote, lying upon the very edge of the County of Derby, with which it is fo intermingled, that the houfes to an ordinary pallenger, cannot be diftinguished which be of either fhire, there being no direct meere between them. This manor, was anciently the inheritance and chief feat of that worthy family of Appleby, who bore azure, fix Martlets or, 3, 2, 1," of whom many lie entombed in the church here. Though many of nute have defcended out of this house, yet most eminent was that renowned foldier Sir Edmund de Appleby, Kat. who ferved at the battle of Cref cy, 20 Edward III. where be took Monfieur Robert du Mailarte, (a nobleman of France,) prifoner. After in 8 Richard II. he went into France with John of Gaunt Duke of Lancaster, to treat of a peace between both Kingdoms. And lastly, 9 Richard II. accompanied the faid Duke, and the Lady Conftance, his wife, daughter and coheir of Peter King of Caftile, in his voy K age |
