DEDICATION.

To Miss E. A. Colquhoun.

MY DEAR FRIEND,

The previous Volume "Light for the Sick Room,"

I dedicated to your Aunt, one very dear, both to you and me, but who has since been graciously conducted through the swellings of Jordan to the better land.

This Book,-designed especially for the Bereaved,— seems in the order of afflictive dispensations, to belong to you. In the mysterious, yet all-wise arrangements of Providence, you have often been called of late years to mourn over departed friends. First, there was your precious and only sister, removed in the morning of life. Then your revered and devoted father; and now your

venerable, noble-hearted, and generous aunt. Thus early in life, your kindred have nearly all passed away.

Let this be your consolation, that God, the rock of your salvation ever liveth; and may His good hand sustain and cheer you, as you pass through the sorrowing scenes of this mutable life, and may His sanctifying grace prepare you for a re-union with departed friends, and a place among the assembly of the first-born, in the Saviour's kingdom.

In sincere Christian sympathy, and love unfeigned,
I am, my dear Friend,

Yours most truly,

17 PORTEUS ROAD,

PADDINGTON.

PREFACE.

THIS Work is designed as a Companion Volume to the one entitled, "Light for the Sick Room; a Book for the Afflicted."* All persons are called by the visitations of divine Providence to experience the sorrows, which bereavements occasion. These seasons are often productive of tenderness of heart and susceptibility of religious impression; and are, therefore, highly favorable for sowing the good seed of Christian truth. To lead the bereaved to profitable reflection, is the object contemplated in the pages of this book. The better to accomplish this, it has been the Author's aim to compress, and present as great a variety of subjects for consideration, into as brief a space as possible; so that the Chapters might not be tedious, and weary the reader.

It will be seen too, that very free use has been made of Poetical pieces, most of which, had been composed on various occasions, expressly to alleviate the sorrow of the bereaved.

See the last page of List of author's works, at the end of this Volume.
