A TREATISE.

SECTION 1.

GOD AND HIS ATTRIBUTES.

I. God is a Spirit; and he is to be 'worshipped in spirit and in truth,' John iv. 24.

[ocr errors]

II. God possesses the attributes of Eternity, Unchangeableness, Omnipresence, Omniscience, Omnipotence, Wisdom, Holiness, Justice, Faithfulness, Goodness or Love. 1. God is Eternal. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting thou art God,' Psa. xc. 2. He is Unchangeable. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variableness, neither shadow of turning,' James i. 17. He is Omnipresent. Whither shall I go from thy Spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend into heaven, thou art there; if I make my bed in hell, behold thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me. If I say, surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me: yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day; the darkness and the light are both alike to thee,' Psa. cxxxix. 7-12. He is Omniscient,* (or knoweth all things.) '0 Lord, thou hast searched me and known me; thou knowest my down-sitting and mine up-rising: thou understandest my thought afar off. Thou compassest my path, and my lying down; thou art acquainted with all my ways: for there is not a word in my tongue

*The facts, that there is a future state, that God knows all our actions, holds us responsible for what we do, and is our Judge; are truths necessary to be known and believed; for the well-being of society, as it is for eternal interests.

A servant in a very irreligious family, robbed his master. On being required to give a reason for his infamous behaviour, he replied: By your wicked example I was led to believe there was no future state; and thus, I lost the fear of death, and was tempted to commit the robbery.'

but lo, O Lord, thou knowest it altogether,' Psa. cxxxix. 1-4. 'He knoweth all things, 1. John iii. 20. He is Omnipotent.'Behold thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm; and there is nothing too hard for thee.' The Great, the Mighty God, the Lord of hosts is thy name,' Jer. xxxii. 17, 18. 'With men it is impossible, but not with God; for with God all things are possible,' Mark x. 27. He is Wise. O Lord, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all,' Psa. civ. 24. His understanding is infinite,' Psa. cxlvii. 5. He is Holy. The Lord is righteous in all his ways, and holy in all his works,' Psa. cxlv. 17. They rest not day and night saying Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come,' Rev. iv. 8. He is Just. 'Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne; mercy and truth shall go before thy face,' Psa. lxxxix. 14. 'Great and marvellous are thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou King of saints,' Rev. xv. 3. He is Faithful. 'God is not a man that he should lie, neither the son of man that he should repent; hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?' Num. xxiii. 19. "Thy work, O Lord, is for ever settled in heaven; thy faithfulness is unto all generations,' Psa. cxix. 89, 90. He is GOOD, even a God of love. The Lord passed by and proclaimed, The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, long-suffering and abundant in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity, transgression, and sin,' Exod. xxxiv. 6, 7. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him, should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved,' John iii. 16, 17. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love,' 1 John iv. 8.

A most important truth is proved from the fact that God possesses the foregoing attributes, namely, that he never does any thing that is wrong; and that he always does every thing that is right. The perfections of God are called attributes, because they are attributed or ascribed unto him, as his essential properties, 1 Chron. xxix. 11.

ORIGINAL, AND FALLEN STATE OF MAN.

I. Our first parents, Adam and Eve, were created in a holy and happy state. And God saw every thing that he had made, and behold it was very good,' Gen. i. 31. This only have I found, that God made man upright,' Eccles. vii. 29. God created man in his own image, after his own likeness, Gen. i. 26, 27. The image of
