PREFACE.

THE two following Lectures were delivered at University College, Oct. 23d and 26th, as a general introduction to the course of studies which it is my province to superintend.

In the first Lecture will be found some extended remarks on certain statements in the singularly eloquent article on Lord Bacon, contained in a recent number of the Edinburgh Review. Those statements occupy a comparatively small space in the article referred to; and, even supposing them as erroneous as I have endeavoured to prove them to be, detract but
