First presented by students of the Imperial Ballet School, on the stage of the school's theatre, on March 6/18 (Julian/Gregorian calendar dates), 1868, in St. Petersburg, Russia. Ballet is a type of performance dance, that originated in the Italian Renaissance courts of the 15th century, and which was further developed in France and Russia as a concert dance form.
