tian, that there have been, within thefe few days paft, very great falls of fnow in that part of the country, with an uncommon severity of weather, heretofore unprecedented at this feafon of the year in the memory of the oldeft perfon living.

Plymouth, May 31. Monday night at twelve o'clock, a king's meffenger arrived here exprefs from the admiralty, with dispatches for commiffioner Fanfhaw. After a fhort confultation, the commiffioner, attended by the boundary watchmen, examined every part of the dock-yard, and fearched all the ftorehoufer. The yard gates were opened till half paft fix, which was an hour and a half later than ufual, when every shipwright, artificer, and labourer, was feparately fearched and examined.

The exprefs received by the commiffioner, was communicating information received by government, that fix defperate foreign incendiaries had arrived in this kingdom, for the diabolical purpose of fetting fire to the dock yards.

Orders have fince been iffued to all the officers in the yard, to use the ftricteft vigilance; to the porters, not to admit any ftrangers, without the most fcrupulous examination-that none be admitted on board any veffel at the Jetty, whofe business is not perfectly known-and to all the warrant officers, to remain and fleep on board their refpective fhips whether it is their week off duty or not.

Thefe orders are fo ftrictly obferved, that even captains of men of war cannot be permitted to land at the Jetty after fun-fet; and commiffioner Saxton has employed fundry perfons to fearch after fuch foreigners as may be found in the neighbourhood. Two French gentlemen were traced to the India arms, Gofport; but, giving a good account of themfelves, they were not taken into cuftody, though they were given to understand, that it was neceflary for them inftantly to leave the town, which they did.

This information was fent over by earl Gower, his majefty's ambassador at Paris.

Portsmouth, June 1. Prince Ferdimand, duke of Wurtemberg, has been received here, and treated with all the honours due to his rank. Yesterday he went round the fleet, attended by admi

Mr. Egerton. Lord and lady Herbert

barge, and the commiffioner and family
in his own boat. The hips he went on
board of were manned, and faluted
with fifteen guns as he went on board
and came out of them. The 3d regi-
ment is drawn up every night on the
grand parade, oppofite the government
houfe, where he is entertained with their
band, and is constantly attended with
the different military and naval officers
of diftinction.

This day the duke was prefent in the
rope-houfe, in the dock yard, during
the making of a 24-inch cable, the prin
cipal labour of which, by a late very
curious invention, is performed by

horfes.

The duke of Wurtemberg dined on Monday with the commiflioner, yefterday with admiral Roddam, and this day went to fee the Isle of Wight, from whence he returns to-morrow night.

On Monday and last night the dake fupped and flept at the Fountain inn, where in the mornings he gave public breakfafts.

Birmingham, June 2. On Thursday laft the final key-itone was fet of the bridge now erecting at Warwick (of one day the centre was releafed from its arch) 105 feet diameter; and on Fiponderous burden, leaving each and every tone as firmly united and as perfect as a folid rock. Notwithstanding the weight upon the centre (which was an admirable piece of carpentry) was near 1000 tons, it was lowered as gradually as the most trivial weight could be by any mechanical power whatever. The earl of Warwick caufed this bridge to be erected.

Peter Huguietan, lord of Vryhouven, who died laft week in an obfcure lodging in Air-street, held at the time of his decease, the following property in the British Funds: Stock.

and as much more in the banks of Holland, Genoa, and Venice: nearly the whole of this immenfe property he has bequeathed to different charitable inftitutions, and purposes; but we underfland it is the intention of his heirs to endeavour, by an appeal to the law, to invalidate the will, upon fome good grounds which they truft will be attended with fuccefs.

3. The commiffioners of the navy have ordered a new floop of war, to mount 18 guns, to be built on a flip now preparing for that purpose in the king's dock-yard at Deptford, by way of experiment of fome timber from the New Foreft, Hampshire; part of which has been cut down in the ufual way, and the other had the whole of the bark ft ipt off.

London, but a seaman, and fit to ferve the king, was exempted from being im preffed? The learned ferjeant faid, that the Admiralty were willing to have this important queftion tried by a jury, upon an action to be brought by the city of London; or they would confent to have it put into fuch a shape as to be folemnly argued and determined by the court. Lord Loughborough faid, the queftion being of great public concern, every cafe that bore upon it ought to be examined, and was of opinion that Randall and French Rould be discharged upon their own recognizances, to appear the fecond day of next term, when the queflion should be either argued before the court, or an iffue directed to be tried by a jury. The counfel on both fides confented, and they were accordingly difcharged upon their own recognizances in 201. each.

Portfinouth, June 7. Laft night two men were taken up as fufpicious cha racters, and after an examination before the magiftrates, one of them, captain Montagu's (of the Aquilon) fervant, an Italian, was difmiffed, and he other fent on board the Princefs Royal.

Samuel Jolinfon has powerfully and pathetically fhewn the univerfal horror which men feel of the last even towards things indifferent, or femetimes unpleafant; yet, notwithstanding this horror, many attended to take their leave of the fcene, where they have been fo often regaled with fictitious forrow and glad-backwards and forwards to Havre-de

At the conclufion of the play, Mr. Palmer addreffed the audience as fol-count of his employ or connections. lows:

Ladies and gentlemen,

In the name of the proprietors, the company, and the manager, I am to return you their moft fincere thanks for the favours they have received this feafon; and to inform you, that in the next feafon we hope to prefent you with a magnificent theatre, worthy of the great metropolis, and of the fovereign whofe patent we enjoy.

6. The court of Common Pleas was remarkably crowded, in confequence of the cafe of Jofeph Randall and John French, two of the livery of London, being appointed to be argued. They had been both impreffed; bt a habeas corpus being granted, they were, in obedience to this writ, brought into court Mr. Serjeant Hill appeared as counfel on behalf of the Admiralty.
