Excerpt from Life of Robert Owen

The narrow circumstances of the family at one time may be inferred from an arrangement to which the father consented, and which could scarcely fail to be prejudicial to a child Of his tem perament. It was that he should become assist ant, Or usher, to his teacher, and pay by this ser vice for his own tuition. We can scarcely suppose that at that early age there could be any degree of that maturity of judgment or the self-control which is essential to onc's usefulness in such a position; and the two years he passed in this way probably conduced much more to the inflation of vanity and to the cngendering of an obstinate Opi nionativeness in the juvenile usher than to the im provement of his pupils.
