In the Exhortation of the Ordering of Pricfts, the Bishop faith, "Therefore ye ought, and have "need to pray earneftly for his Holy Spirit. And again," We have good Hope, that you will continually pray to GOD the Father, by the Me"diation of our only Saviour Jefus Chrift, for the heavenly Affiftance of the Holy Ghost." And at the laying on of Hands, he faith, Receive the Holy Ghost.

To all I have yet faid, I add a little more wherein the Church confeffeth, that every one void of the Spirit of God, will either perish by Defpair, or by Prefumption. "As the godly

Here we may ice the very Words used, that fo many have cavil'd with, that is, fccl in them

felves the Working of GOD's Spirit. Men want to be accounted Chriftians, because an Infidel's Name feems to be odious, even in the Ears of the common People; and it is this, namely, because they would not be counted Unbelievers; s; that makes them go about to prove themfelves Chriftians, and Believers, without receiving the Holy Ghoft. Alas! in vain do they ftrive to do this. If they be of the Church, I have fhewn them her Doctrine; to wit, Works done before the Grace of Christ, and the Infpiration of his Spirit, are not pleasant to God. Article the 13th. She fpeaketh alfo the fame in the 17th Article, which I have juft now mentioned. If they be any other Sorts of Proteftants, I have anfwered them from the Doctrines of the Fathers, and Martyrs, who watered (as it were) and fealed thefe Truths with their Blood. That I may anfwer all who confefs, or will hear the everlasting Gofpel, I yet fet dowr. a few Paffages out of the Prophets, and Apoftles, and fay as our Saviour alfo faid, If they will not hear them, neither will they believe though one rofe from the Dead, Luke xvi.

Thus faith the Lord by Ifaiah, Wo to them that cover with a Covering, but not of my Spirit, Ifaiah xxx. I. So St. John faith, He that bath the Son, hath Life; and be that hath not the Son of God, hath not Life, 1 John v. 12. So alfo faith our Saviour, Except a Man be born of Water, and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the Kingdom of God, John iii. 5. And St. Paul faith, Jefus Chrift is in you, except ye be Reprobates, 2 Cor. xiii. 5. And again, Now if any Man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his, Rom. viii. 9.

I very well know that to all who have not the Spirit of Chrift, I am like one defcribing Light
