PREFACE.

THE substance of the argument contained in this little volume is not claimed as any new discovery. It is not new to the author, neither will it be found new to the minds of many others. To those who have never had occasion to examine carefully the subjects here treated of, but have received their impressions from current traditions and opinions, we trust the book may prove useful. In the arrangement of the materials, and in the general development of the argument, the author is not aware of any extended treatise which is designed to compass the same ends.

Our country is now passing through a period of most momentous transition. All serious and thoughtful men have their fears as to what the end of these things shall be. Could the great mass of the nation rise to a clear perception of the elements involved in this struggle, and to a lofty resolution to follow the law of truth and justice, putting far away small and unworthy prejudices, we might hope for a safe deliverance from all the perils by which we are now encompassed. It is the aim of this little volume to assist in the formation of a healthy public sentiment, and with this hope it is sent forth upon its mission.

WEST NEWTON, 1864.
