of the public houses from some of the characters they are certain to meet with there, and how liable they are to have drink offered to them, and the way in which they may acquire that fatal taste, I declare to you, if I were a working man I would rather cut off my right hand than save myself the trouble of fetching my own beer by sending my little son or daughter for it."

EDITORIAL NOTES.

THE "Austral" reached Port Philip, October 1st.

THE Prize Day at Edgehill, October 1st, was a brilliant success, as we hear it was at Shebbear also, a fortnight later. The Countess of Portsmouth distributed the prizes on both occasions; the Earl of Portsmouth presided at the luncheon at Edgehill, and Lord Lymington, M.P., at Shebbear. Other distinguished friends were also present.

As we have been unable to acknowledge, personally, all the messages of sympathy we have received, or answer numerous inquiries as to our health, we take this opportunity of thanking our kind friends, and to inform them that we hope to be able in a week or two to resume our work in fully restored health.

Brief Notices of Books.

Historic Sketches of Free Methodism. By JOSEPH KIRSOP. A. Crombie. (IS.)

WRITTEN in an interesting style, and while the writer holds decided views on certain controverted points, he evidently wishes to be fair to others. A brief paragraph on the Bible Christians-" who have hidden their Methodistic character under a wider appellation"-is fairly appreciative, and in the main correct. We shall not be expected, we hope, to agree with Mr. Kirsop when he says that the Bible Christian Connexion, "though chiefly confined to one angle of the country, has done good work in its day," as if its usefulness were principally in the past. On the question of Union, Mr. Kirsop takes precisely the same view that some of our Brethren did at the Exeter Conference, 1883. "Re-union with the present body, on a suitable basis, he would hail with satisfaction, provided the union was general, not local and partial. The pros pect of losing our churches piecemeal was not agreeable to every one, and the writer is not alone in feeling gratification at the thought that Free Methodism has still to be represented in the Southern world." Union on an honourable basis anywhere we do not regard as a "loss," and one Methodist Church in England, one in Australia, one in America, one in Africa, one in China, and one in every other country, forming one grand confederated church throughout the world, is our ideal of the future of Methodism, and therefore we cannot disapprove of "local and partial” unions, as Mr. Kirsop and others do, or insist on all unions being deferred till universal union is possible, as that would be to insist, in the circumstances, on an unreasonable condition, and indefinitely delay what all

admit is desirable.

Consecrated Culture: Memorials of Benjamin Alfred Gregory, M.A., Oxon. By BENJAMIN GREGORY, D.D. T. Woolmer. 5s.

An exquisitely beautiful book. A finer illustration of gifts and graces blended in perfect harmony could hardly be found. Though Mr. Gregory's life seemed, owing to its rare promise, to be prematurely cut short, it was also great in achievement. To young men of brilliant parts it can hardly fail to prove a grand inspiration. His father has fulfilled his task with parental tenderness and

wise discrimination.

ARSON JAQUES, AND HIS CHIPS AND CHATS. By J. O. KEEN, D.D. "Parsons and people may alike profit by reading this lively little work. The Chips and Chats are very amusing, but Parson Jaques has his head on the right way, and his heart in the right place, and is a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. True to its title, the book is fragmentary, and many pages are fascinatingly funny. Whoever needs a few recreative hours can find them, and extract profit from them, in fellowship with Dr. Keen's clever and acute little "Parson.'-Methodist New Connexion Magazine.

ILLER MANNING: A STORY OF CORNISH LIFE.
FORESTER. Preface by F. W. BOURNE. 1s. cloth boards.

By MATTHEW "Au admirable little book from beginning to end. Let all who want something at once profitable, refreshing and racy, get it. Our good friends the Bible Christians are to be congratulated on their success in so happily preserving such sketches of original characters. The story is well told, in a simple and straightforward style, and is rigorously confined to the man himself, without any moralising or reflections such as often swell the pages and annoy the reader. There is not a page to be skipped or skimmed."-Rev. M. G. Pearse, in Wesleyan Methodist Magasine.

HE WELSH PULPIT OF TO-DAY. Sermons by Eminent Welsh Clergymen and Ministers. Edited by Rev. J. CYNDDYLAN JONES. "The Welsh 'fire' was never seen in England before in this form. . . There is not a poor sermon among them all. Several of them are high--we will add, astonishingly high-and no English preacher need be above taking a hint from any one of them. Various associations are bringing England and Wales closer to each other from an ecclesiastical point of view, and this volume may well be a factor in such a good work. Meanwhile, it deserves to receive a hearty welcome as a vivid picture of those spiritual elements which have so long constituted the strength and beauty of the sanctuary' in the Principality of Wales."--Liverpool Mercury.

"In expounding certain portions of this matchless Gospel, Mr. Jones is even more at home than when discussing the questions raised in Matthew or the Acts. The profound metaphysics and theology of the Prologue have a peculiar charm for him, and it is easy to see that it has been a labour of love to make them clear to the humblest mind "-Methodist Recorder.
