E are glad of the opportunity, which this returning season affords, of again addressing a few words to our readers. We become more anxious as the years "complete their rounds," to give all diligence to make "our calling and election sure," and to promote, so far as in us lies, the usefulness of our friends, and their growth in grace and in the knowledge of God and of His Son Jesus Christ. This, in the preparation and selection of the articles for the successive numbers of this volume, we have steadily kept in view. In this way, a moral force we may hope will be generated that shall do much, by the blessing of God, to make these heroic enterprises a grand success, and in that way an incalculable good to our churches. The "Sketches from Real Life" are intended
