W. Was this the same wicked Haman who had begged the king to kill all the Jews, Mamma? If I wonder that the queen

it were,

asked him to dinner with her.

Mamma.

She had a reason

for doing so, which you will know by and bye. Whilst they were drinking their wine, and eating their grand dinner, the king again asked Queen Esther what he could

do to please her most, or whether he could give her any thing she would like to have. Then the queen said, that if the king would come to her feast the next day also, and bring Haman with him again, she would make her request. So Haman was very much pleased, for he thought it a great honour to dine at the queen's own table; but when he passed through the gate of the palace, and saw the Jew sitting there, without moving or bowing to him

as he went by, he was vexed and angry, and when he reached home he told his wife and friends that all his riches and all his glory were nothing to him, so long as he saw the Jew sitting at the king's gate. Then his wife and friends told him to have a great gallows made, and to ask the king to let the Jew be hanged upon it. A gallows is the name of a place made on purpose to hang people.

W. How very cruel and un

just! only because this Jew did not choose to bow down to him. Oh, Mamma, I hope the king did not agree to it.

Mamma.

I believe I must

leave the rest of my story till another day. You shall hear next time, what became of this proud wicked Haman.
