L.

HYMNS.

1 AWAKE, my soul, and with the sun,

Thy daily stage of duty run;

Shake off dull sloth, and early rise
To pay thy morning sacrifice.
2 Wake and lift up thyself, my heart,
And with the angels bear thy part,
Who day and night unwearied sing
High praise to the Eternal King.
3 I wake, I wake! ye heavenly choir,
May your devotion me inspire,
That I, like you, my age may spend,
Like you, may on my God attend.
4 Had I but wings, to heav'n I'd fly;
My God, do Thou my soul supply
With wings of love and warm desire
To Thee and Heaven to aspire.

L.

Praise God from whom, &c.

LL praise to Thee who safe hast kept

Grant, Lord, when I from death awake,
I may of endless life partake.

2 Lord, I my vows to Thee renew,

Disperse my sins as morning dew,
Guard my first springs of thought and will,
And with Thyself my spirit fill.

3 Let all my converse be sincere,
My conscience as the noon-day clear;
For Thine all-seeing eye surveys

My secret thoughts, and words, and ways.

4 Direct, control, suggest, this day
All I design, or do, or say,

That all my powers, with all their might,
In thy sole glory may unite.

Praise God from whom, &c.

3 ALL praise to Thee in light arrayed,

Who light Thy dwelling place hast made;

L. A boundless ocean of bright beams
From Thy all-glorious Godhead streams.
2 The sun in his meridian height

L.

Is

very darkness in Thy sight;

Do Thou enlighten and inflame
My soul with love of Thy great name.
3 Blest Jesu, Thou, on heaven intent,
Whole nights hast in devotion spent;
But I, frail creature, soon am tired,
And all my zeal is soon expired.
4 Shine on me, Lord, new life impart,
Fresh ardour kindle in my heart;
One ray of Thy all-quickening light
Dispels the sloth and clouds of night.
Praise God from whom, &c.

A BROKEN heart, my God, my King,

Is all the sacrifice bring:

The God of grace will ne'er despise
A broken heart for sacrifice.

2 My soul lies humbled in the dust,

And owns Thy dreadful sentence just ;
Look down, O Lord, with pitying eye,
And save the soul condemned to die.
3 Then will I teach the world Thy ways;
Sinners shall learn thy sov'reign grace;
I'll lead them to my Saviour's blood,
And they shall praise a pard'ning God.

4 Oh, may Thy love inspire my tongue!
Salvation shall be all my song;

And all my powers shall join to bless
The Lord, my strength and righteousness.

5 ACCORDING to Thy gracious word,

C.

In deep humility,

This will I do, my dying Lord:
I will remember Thee.

2 Thy body, broken for my sake,
My bread from heav'n shall be;
Thy sacramental cup I take,
And thus remember Thee.

3 When to the cross I turn my eyes,
And gaze on Calvary,

O Lamb of God, my sacrifice!

I must remember Thee.

4 And when these failing lips grow dumb, And mind and mem'ry flee,

When Thou shalt in Thy kingdom come,
Jesus, remember me!

CHARGE to keep I have⚫
A God to glorify;

A never-dying soul to save;
A rest to gain on high.
From youth to hoary age,
My calling to fulfil;

Oh, may it all my powers engage

To do my Master's will.

3

Arm me with jealous care,

4

As in Thy sight to live;

And now Thy servant, Lord, prepare

A strict account to give.

Help me to watch and pray,
And still on Thee rely;

Oh, let me not my trust betray,
But press to realms on high.

GAIN the day returns of holy rest,

[blest;

10s. When, like His own, He bade our labours cease, And all be piety, and all be peace. 2 Let us devote this consecrated day

To learn His will, and all we learn, obey; In pure religion's hallowed duties share, And join in penitence, and join in prayer. 3 Father of Heav'n! in whom our hopes confide, Whose power defends us, and whose precepts guide, In life our Guardian, and in death our Friend; Glory supreme be Thine till time shall end.

8 ALL hail the great Emmanuel's name!

Ye angels, prostrate fall;

c. Bring forth the royal diadem,
And crown Him Lord of all.

9

2 Ye saints, redeem'd of Adam's race,
Ye ransom'd from the fall,

Hail Him who saves you by His grace,
And crown Him Lord of all.

3 Ye realms of every tongue and name,
Nations and kindreds all,

Your mighty Saviour's praise proclaim,
And crown Him Lord of all.

4 Oh, that, with yonder sacred throng,
We at His feet may fall,

Join in the everlasting song,
And crown Him Lord of all.

ALMIGHTY God, in humble prayer

To Thee our hearts we

C. Do Thou our waiting souls prepare
For Thy most needful gift.

2 We ask not golden streams of wealth
Along our path to flow;

We ask not undecaying health,
Nor length of years below.

3 We ask not honours which an hour
May bring and take

away;

We ask not pleasure, pomp, and power,
Lest we should go astray.

4 We ask for wisdom :-Lord, impart
The knowledge how to live;
A wise and understanding heart
To all before Thee give

10 ALMIGHTY God, thy word is cast

into the ground;
Now let the dew of heaven descend,
And righteous fruits abound.

2 Let not the foe of Christ and man
This holy seed remove;
But give it root in every heart,
To bring forth fruits of love.

3 Let not the world's deceitful cares
The rising plant destroy;
But let it yield a hundredfold
The fruits of peace and joy.

4 Oft as the precious seed is sown,

Thy quick'ning grace bestow;
That all, whose souls the truth receive,
Its saving power may know.

11 "A and we shall wander here no more;

LITTLE while "-our Lord shall come,

L.

He'll take us to our Father's home,
Where He for us has gone before.

2 "A little while,"-He'll come again;
Let us the precious hours redeem;
Our only grief to give Him pain,
Our joy to serve and follow Him.
3 "A little while,"-'t will soon be past;
Why should we shun the needful cross?
Oh, let us in His footsteps haste,
Counting for Him all else but loss.
