The Lord Chancellor acquainted the House, "That "His Majefty not thinking fit to be perfonally prefent Commiffion.here this Day, had been pleafed to caufe a Commif"fion to be iffued under the Great Seal, in order to "the opening and holding of this Parliament."

"The Lords Commiffioners defire their immediate "Attendance in this House, to hear the Commiffion "read."

"His Majefty not thinking fit to be present here "this Day in His Royal Perfon, has been pleafed in "order to the opening and holding of this Parliament, "to caufe Letters Patent to be paffed under His Great

Seal, conftituting Us and feveral other Lords therein "named, His Commiffioners, to do all Things in His Majesty's Name, on His Part neceffary to be per"formed in this Parliament; this will more fully appear by the Letters Patent themselves, which must be now "read."

Archibald Earl of Caffillis, being by Letters Patent introduced. bearing Date the Twelfth Day of November in the Fortyfeventh Year of His prefent Majefty, created Baron Ailfa of Ailfa, in the County of Ayr, and the Heirs Male of his Body, was in his Robes introduced between the Lord Walfingham and the Lord Saint Helens (alfo in their Robes), the Yeoman Ufher of the Black Rod, Garter King of Arms, and the Earl Marshal preceding: His Lordship, on his Knee, prefented his Patent to the Lord Chancellor at the Woolfack, who delivered it to the Clerk; and the fame was read at the Table:

His Writ of Summons was alfo read as follows; (videlicet)

"GEORGE the Third, by the Grace of God of the "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, King, "Defender of the Faith: To Our right trusty and well"beloved Archibald Kennedy of Ailfa in Our County of

Left; commanded the Yeoman Ufher of the Black Rod
to let the Commons know, "The Lord Commiflioners
"defire their immediate Attendance in this Houfe,"

"My Lords,

His Majefty's faithful Commons in Parliament "affembled have, in purfuance of His Royal Direction, and according to their antient Right, proceeded to "elect a Speaker, and their Choice has once more fallen "on me; but how properly for me, for themfelves, "and for the Public, remains for His Majefty's Con"fideration,

lity and Refignation fubmit myfelf; being well
"affured, that if His Majefty fhall think fit to dif-
