Fantastic book. Having read a few of these cosmology books in the last couple of years I did manage to follow the author most of the way - at least until three quarters of the way through. Fascinating but not an easy read. Well worth it though. :) ( )

Ch. 6 is too long. He doesn't get around to ' Information ' until the very last chapter. ( The differentation of ' a simulation ' and ' a fake ' is interesting but unclear ) ( )

Although not the easiest read, this book is a fascinating journey into physical theories sometimes sound just like SF (multiverse, time travel or that the world is notning just a computer programme). ( )

Gribbin is as good a popularizer of physics and cosmology as anyone. The multiverse conceptions he covers include Deutsch's variation on Everett's many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics, the infinity of bubble universes associated with Linde's and Vilenkin's chaotic/eternal inflation theories, string-theoretic braneworlds, and the string-theory landscape of 10^500 kinds of universe. Topics like quantum computation, cyclic (ekpyrotic) cosmology, and baby-universe engineering by lifeforms are not omitted either. Yum.

This is a broad and lucid survey of the speculative edges of cosmology. It is less than convincing about actual infinities, but with them as givens the book develops notions about our very own universe that are fascinating. ( )
