This book provides a comprehensive survey of the dynamic stresses in railway bridges under moving vehicles and summarizes important theoretical and experimental results which has been obtained from various research programs dealing with European railway bridges. Drawing on the vast experience of the author, and his work for the Office for Research and Experiments of the International Union of Railways, Dynamics of railways bridges: investigates both bridge and moving railway vehicles; summarizes the basic dynamic characteristics of railway bridges - natural frequencies and damping); describes the effect of parameters such as the speed of vehicles, track irregularities etc. on the dynamic behaviour of bridges; and examines the vertical, horizontal longitudinal and horizontal transverse effects - starting and braking forces, lateral impacts etc).
